the band: Happy 4th of July folks! It is late and Cam, John Kurzweg, his wife CeCe, and I have just returned home from a great 4th of July celebration out here in Santa Fe. Yep, New Mexicans celebrate the 4th of July just like the rest of us. We went to a party hosted by the folks at Frogville Records (www.frogvilleplanet.com). Frogville is a local record label that has a great roster of rootsy, Americana-type artists, including Hundred Year Flood (www.hundredyearflood.com), Goshen (www.goshen-music.com), and a handful of other good acts. We've gotten to be friendly with the HYF/Goshen folks since we've been out here, and they threw a great party tonight. We watched the city's fireworks show from the top of a hill where the Frogville studio is located. It was a beautiful setting and an impressive show. I am now back at the Kurzweg's listening to Aerosmith's "Get Your Wings" album. Other stuff I've been listening to since I've been out here is Free's "Molten Gold", Faces' "A Nod is as Good as a Wink", Led Zeppelin's "III" and "Physical Graffiti", and ZZ Top's "Tres Hombres". I'm surprised that I've been listening to so much music - I figured my ears would be shot from the studio, but I'm actually enjoying digging into some of these classic records. Tomorrow will mark the beginning of Cam and Jess laying down guitar tracks. I can't wait to hear what they have in store. We stayed up until almost 4:00 am last night listening to the two of them play acoustic and sing on the porch. They played Tishamingo stuff, as well as songs by Steppenwolf, The Eagles, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brad Paisley, more Eagles (this place used to belong to Glen Frey, so they played all the Frey/Eagles stuff they knew - but no Smuggler's Blues unfortunately), Hank Jr., Taj Mahal, JJ Cale...the list and songs went on and on. It was a magical night. When John finished working in the studio he joined the fellas on guitar and vocals. I wish I had brought out the video camera for that. It was a night I'll never forget. A great moment of pure music and friendship - as stripped down and pure as it gets. More updates to come.... - Proc
